About The Workshop

Join Dr Tamara Russell to explore Body in Mind from her unique perspective. Tamara’s work blends mindful movements from martial arts with body explorations and the investigations of daily movements, weaving neuroscientific principles to enrich the learning. This approach supports a bi-directional link between body and mind – each using the other to support learning and help students connect at both the conceptual and experiential levels. Exercises from her book Mindfulness in Motion will be shared to illustrate these points.

Tamara will share a neurocognitive model of mindfulness, pointing to the four cognitive stages and the three key brain networks that need a good workout to help us develop both awareness of body and mind and their interactions. This work has been presented in her latest book #whatismindfulness. This approach shows how any movement or moment can be mindful if certain brain networks are engaged in certain ways.

The six principles of Pilates (breath, concentration, control, centering, precision and flow) will be explored in relationship to the model. Participants will get a clear understanding of how various practices tap into different parts of the model. Skilful teaching is knowing what to introduce, when and in what format. The model can help you to work in more adaptive and flexible ways with your own practices and with students.

Mindfulness in Motion by Dr Tamara Russell will be available to purchase on the day or anytime from her online shop.
